Best Email Marketing Platforms for Nonprofits
The short answer
MailerLite is the best starting point for most nonprofits that need newsletters, forms, landing pages and practical automation. It is easy for staff or volunteers to maintain and eligible organisations can apply for 30% off paid plans.
Choose Constant Contact when event registration and live support are worth the higher price. Sender and EmailOctopus give very small organisations more free capacity. GetResponse can suit a nonprofit with deeper follow-up or webinar needs, but its largest published discount has important conditions.
Our picks
MailerLite — best for most small nonprofits
MailerLite balances ease, useful email features and a clear nonprofit offer. The current 30% discount applies after verification and cannot be combined with the annual discount.
Constant Contact — best for events and live guidance
Constant Contact combines campaigns with event registration, tickets, payments and attendee messages. Eligible nonprofits receive 20% off six-month prepay or 30% off 12-month prepay. There is no nonprofit discount on monthly billing.
Sender — best free capacity
Sender Free supports 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 monthly sends. Registered nonprofits can apply for 25% off paid plans.
EmailOctopus — best simple budget option
EmailOctopus Free supports 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 monthly emails. The provider currently offers nonprofits a 20% lifetime discount.
Other options worth considering
Mailchimp
Mailchimp offers familiar integrations and a 15% discount to verified nonprofits. The free allowance is only 250 contacts and 500 monthly sends, and several contact states can count towards paid capacity. It is most defensible when staff or integrations already depend on it.
GetResponse
GetResponse adds landing pages, funnels, webinars and deeper automation. Eligible non-political nonprofits can apply for up to 50% off selected plans. The published 50% offer requires a GetResponse logo and link on the organisation's website, cannot be combined with annual or other offers and lasts 24 months. Budget for the standard price after the term.
AWeber
Qualifying US 501(c)(3) organisations can receive three months of Lite or Plus free and 25% off after that. AWeber is most useful when support and migration help matter more than advanced automation.
Compare the free allowance you will actually use
| Product | Current free email allowance | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sender | 2,500 subscribers; 15,000 emails a month | One user and Sender branding |
| EmailOctopus | 2,500 subscribers; 10,000 emails a month | One form, one landing page and 30-day report history |
| MailerLite | 250 subscribers; 2,500 emails a month | Limited assets and support |
| Mailchimp | 250 contacts; 500 emails a month | Very little room for a second full-list send or growth |
| Brevo | 300 emails a day; up to 100,000 stored contacts | Daily cap and limited automation reach |
A free plan can work for a new newsletter. It does not replace donor management, payments, clear consent records or someone responsible for the work.
When an email platform is enough
Choose a general email platform when you mainly need to:
- collect permissioned subscribers;
- send newsletters, appeals and event reminders;
- segment donors, volunteers and members using fields from another system;
- run welcome, reminder and re-engagement sequences;
- build forms and simple landing pages.
Decide which system owns donor or member truth. If the CRM sends data into the email platform, test how unsubscribes, duplicate people and field changes flow back.
When you need fundraising or membership software instead
Choose a fundraising platform when donations are the system of record
Givebutter combines fundraising pages, forms, donor CRM, events and email. Its “free” model depends on optional donor tips. With tips enabled it advertises 0% platform fees; with tips disabled, a 3% platform fee and standard processing fees apply. That is a different purchase from an ordinary email subscription.
Zeffy and similar products also belong in this boundary discussion. Compare payment economics, donor experience, exports, reporting and ownership rather than only the email feature.
Choose membership software when renewals and member records come first
WildApricot combines a member database, renewals, payments, event registration and email. It may be a better system of record for an association or club, even if a specialist email platform has a better editor.
Do not force fundraising or membership products into the six-platform email ranking. Start with the main system the organisation needs.
Check the discount before you budget
Before relying on any nonprofit offer, confirm:
- the accepted legal status and required documents;
- whether political or advocacy organisations are excluded;
- the plans and list sizes covered;
- whether annual, promotional or partner discounts can be combined;
- the prepayment and refund terms;
- whether a public logo or link is required;
- the discount duration and renewal price.
Obtain written confirmation before purchasing a long prepay term.
Protect consent and volunteer access
Keep donation records and marketing permission separate. A donation or event registration does not automatically permit every future campaign. Import unsubscribes before active contacts, and do not let volunteers share one administrator login or export the full donor file without need.
Authenticate the sending domain, assign an owner for list hygiene and test major appeals in smaller stages. A seasonal spike can expose old addresses and weak consent quickly.
Verdict
Start with MailerLite for straightforward nonprofit email. Choose Constant Contact for events and support, Sender or EmailOctopus for free capacity, and GetResponse for deeper follow-up. Move to fundraising or membership software when donor payments, records or renewals—not newsletters—define the purchase.
