Hootsuite vs Buffer
Hootsuite and Buffer both help you publish social content, reply to people and review the results. Buffer offers a free starting point and a paid setup built around connected accounts. Hootsuite brings a wider set of monitoring, reporting and customer-care tools, with subscriptions priced per user.
For straightforward publishing and comments, Buffer costs less to start using. Hootsuite becomes more compelling when a team needs the broader inbox and monitoring features often missing from a small scheduler.
Publishing and approvals
Buffer combines per-account queues with a wider calendar. You can prepare one post, adapt it for different networks and keep drafts or ideas until they are ready. Team adds unlimited members and approval steps.
Hootsuite also brings publishing into a shared calendar, with bulk scheduling, suggested posting times and design tools. Its current Advanced plan adds team approval and message-assignment controls. It is worth considering when approving content and coordinating replies are part of the same team responsibility.
Comments are not the whole inbox
Buffer's Community tools handle comments across supported networks. Insights also supplies performance reporting.
Hootsuite offers a broader inbox and monitoring package, with automation on Professional and assignment on Advanced. Those functions can justify a larger subscription when incoming messages need organised follow-up. Check the specific networks and message types you handle; publishing support and inbox support are different.
Compare a realistic subscription
| Example | Buffer, annual billing | Hootsuite, annual billing |
|---|---|---|
| One user and three accounts | Essentials: $15 a month equivalent | Standard: $99 a month equivalent, up to ten accounts |
| Team access with post approvals | Team: $10 per account per month, unlimited members | Advanced: $399 per user per month |
The three-account Buffer example is three times its $5 Essentials rate. These are not equivalent feature bundles: Hootsuite's higher plan includes substantially more than approval, and its price grows with users. Buffer's price grows with connected accounts, with discounts available at larger account counts.
Buffer Free covers one user, three accounts and ten queued posts per account. Its queue refills after posts publish. Hootsuite offers a 14-day trial rather than that ongoing free allowance.
Our verdict
Choose Buffer when you mainly want to prepare posts, manage comments and understand the response without a large subscription. Choose Hootsuite when monitoring, inbox automation and coordinated customer care will be used regularly alongside publishing. The broader suite is valuable when it replaces work you would otherwise do in several places.
