Later vs Buffer

Later and Buffer both help you prepare social posts before they are due. Later puts visual content, its media library and a Link in Bio page close to the publishing plan. Buffer offers a flexible queue for each account, with comments and performance reports alongside it.

Later is worth a closer look when planning photos and videos is central to the work. Buffer is a useful starting point when you want regular publishing across a few accounts, including a clearly defined free queue.

The differences that matter

ProductMain appealHow account capacity works
LaterVisual planning, media organisation and eligible Reels audioSocial sets, each containing one profile per supported network
BufferPer-account queues, comment replies and a refillable free allowanceEach individual connected account is a channel

Preparing visual posts

Later keeps media and the content calendar together, with a Link in Bio page for sending visitors onward. It also supports eligible Instagram audio when preparing automatically published Reels.

That audio feature has limits: not every track is available, and Later cannot select a specific starting section of a song. Buffer generally uses notification publishing when a post needs native Instagram features such as music or stickers. In either case, the exact format matters more than an Instagram logo in the integrations list.

Buffer's strength is adapting the post for each account and putting it into a queue. If you are preparing a mix of LinkedIn updates, shorter announcements and Instagram posts, that account-by-account approach may be all you need.

Teams and reports

Both products provide analytics, and both offer paid approval tools. Buffer Team includes unlimited members, channel permissions and approvals. Later Growth includes two users, two social sets, approvals and more analytics history than Starter.

Later becomes more useful as the media library and visual plan become part of how people work together. Buffer Team is worth pricing when several contributors manage only a few accounts.

What will your setup cost?

ExampleLater, annual billingBuffer, annual billing
One user, three accounts on different supported networksStarter: $18.75 a month equivalent for one social setEssentials: $15 a month equivalent for three channels
Two users with approvals, same three accountsGrowth: $37.50 a month equivalent, including two setsTeam: $30 a month equivalent for three channels

These are different feature bundles, not an exact like-for-like quote. Buffer totals use three times its $5 or $10 channel rate. Later's set can include only one profile per network: three Instagram accounts would not fit the one-set example. Monthly billing has different rates.

Buffer Free has three channels and ten queued posts per channel, refilling as they publish. Later describes a limited free plan but does not state its full current posting allowance in the plan guide. Confirm the offer at signup rather than assuming it matches an older review.

Our verdict

Choose Later for a media-centred publishing plan, useful Link in Bio tools and eligible Reels audio. Choose Buffer for flexible account queues, comments and straightforward team access across a smaller account set. Both can support regular publishing; the deciding factor is how you prepare the content and how your accounts fit the plan.
