OpenProject vs Jira: self-hosted Scrum or cloud issue delivery

OpenProject and Jira connect software delivery to a shared plan, but they emphasize different working environments. OpenProject combines current Scrum planning with work packages and Gantt schedules, including a free self-managed Community edition. Jira Cloud centers on issues, connected development activity and release information, with Premium adding cross-team dependency planning.

OpenProject is worth trying first when sprints sit inside a wider project schedule or you want to operate the application yourself. Jira Cloud is worth trying first when the team wants issue-to-release coordination in the Atlassian environment. Community includes dedicated sprint objects and action boards; simultaneous active sprints require Enterprise.

Jira backlog and sprint planning

Jira also supports the planning loop before code is linked: rank the backlog, estimate selected work, set sprint dates and a goal, then inspect remaining work, scope changes and completion. Choose a team-managed project for local configuration or company-managed shared schemes for a common process; Premium Plans adds cross-team dependencies, capacity and scenarios.

OpenProject: keep the sprint and the wider schedule together

Work packages can represent bugs, tasks, milestones or phases, with owners, dates and activity. A team can place software work in Scrum planning while using Gantt and other project views for the wider schedule. This is helpful when the sprint is only one part of the delivery plan.

Version 17.3 introduced dedicated sprint objects, automatic sprint boards and guided handling of unfinished work. Current Scrum includes sprint goals and dates, story points, ordered backlogs and burndown. Sprints are separate from release versions, so check the deployed version rather than relying on older version-based sprint instructions.

All action-board types are available in Community from 17.3. Moving a card on an action board updates the represented attribute, subject to workflow rules: a status board changes status, while a version board changes release version. A Basic board simply groups cards without changing their records. That distinction matters when board movement forms part of the team's process.

One active sprint is the default; teams needing simultaneous active sprints should evaluate the Enterprise add-on. Wider project scheduling and multiple concurrent sprints are different requirements, so identify which one you actually need.

Jira: bring issues, development and releases together

Jira Cloud organizes backlog and board work, then links it to the developer tools that implement it. After an administrator connects those tools, issue keys associate branches, commits and pull requests with issues. Development panels and release pages make the linked activity available in the planning context.

The benefit is a common reference between the planned item and implementation progress. Teams still need consistent issue-key conventions and an agreed meaning for completion. Premium adds cross-team dependency planning; consider that tier when coordination between teams, rather than just one backlog, is the reason for buying.

The code connections need different setup

OpenProject can show GitHub pull-request status and Actions state on a work package, including many-to-many PR links. Its configuration requires an integration user and API token with suitable rights, per-repository webhooks, enabled modules and viewing permissions. Set a shared webhook secret to verify signatures. GitHub continues to host the code and execute CI.

Jira's connected development tools rely on issue references to relate code activity to work. Try the specific repository and release tools your team uses rather than assuming all events will appear with no further configuration. In either system, a linked PR or workflow result needs to be interpreted in context; it is not automatic confirmation that the change reached production.

OpenProject vs Jira pricing: deployment and team costs

OpenProject Community is free to license, with unlimited users and projects and community support. Your organization owns server administration, patches, access, integration secrets and recovery. Backups need PostgreSQL data and OpenProject assets. Paid Enterprise features and support can help, while vendor Cloud transfers application hosting and maintenance to OpenProject.

Use OpenProject pricing for up-to-date amounts, selecting hosting, currency, billing term, seat minimum and add-ons. Basic support includes working-hours email, Professional adds phone, and higher tiers offer further installation or onboarding help. Support for an on-premises installation is not the same as vendor hosting.

Jira Free supports ten users with 2 GB and community support. Standard adds roles and permissions, 250 GB and regional business-hours support. Premium adds cross-team planning, unlimited storage and around-the-clock critical-issue support. Use Jira pricing for a total based on actual monthly users or the annual user tier, including relevant apps and identity requirements.

If running on your own infrastructure is mandatory, choose an actual Community or on-premises OpenProject deployment. OpenProject Cloud and Jira Cloud cannot meet that requirement. Jira stopped Data Center sales to new customers on March 30, 2026; existing customers have a separate lifecycle to plan around.

Moving a team requires a sample project

If you are switching, compare a representative project before committing to a migration date. For an OpenProject move, check custom fields, attachments, history and target-version compatibility. Jira's CSV path also needs field mapping and does not guarantee preservation of every permission, automation or app field.

A hosted evaluation can show whether people understand the backlog and boards. A planned self-hosted deployment additionally needs its own installation and recovery checks.

Choose the next step around your main need

Start with OpenProject to evaluate Scrum alongside broader schedules or a self-managed application. Try one backlog, a sprint and a linked GitHub pull request in the intended version, then request any Enterprise features and support that workflow requires.

Start with Jira Cloud to evaluate connected issue and release coordination, including Premium planning if dependencies cross teams. Use a representative repository and price the plan with the required permissions before expanding the rollout.
