OpenProject Scrum Review and Pricing: Community or Enterprise?
OpenProject combines Scrum planning with structured work packages, Gantt schedules and a choice of hosting. A software team can manage a backlog, plan a sprint and follow linked GitHub pull requests while keeping milestones and other project work in the same system. That combination is useful when software delivery forms part of a wider schedule.
Current Community releases offer a substantial agile starting point. Explore the sprint and work-package views together to see whether they give your team the balance of delivery detail and project oversight it needs.
What current Community Scrum includes
OpenProject 17.3 introduced dedicated sprint objects, automatic sprint boards and guided handling of unfinished work. Current Scrum planning includes backlog buckets, sprint dates and goals, story points, ordering and burndown. When a sprint closes, unfinished work can move to the backlog or another sprint.
This matters if you are evaluating an older installation or reading older instructions: sprints are now separate from release versions. One active sprint is the default; multiple active sprints require the Enterprise add-on and its configuration. Check your deployed version before designing a multi-team process around that capability.
Release 17.3 also made all action-board types available in Community. On a status board, moving a card updates its status subject to workflow rules; a version board changes the release version. Basic boards behave differently: moving a card groups it visually without changing the underlying work package. Choose the board according to whether movement should update the record or simply organize a discussion.
Keep a sprint in the wider project
Work packages can represent bugs, tasks, milestones or phases, with ownership, dates and activity visible in a table and detail view. Gantt planning gives those records a place in a broader schedule. The practical benefit is being able to discuss the sprint's work alongside the dates and milestones it supports.
Admins configure work-package types and enable the appropriate project modules, including Backlogs and Boards. Establish the intended statuses and permissions before asking people to use board movement as part of their daily process.
Bring GitHub review and Actions status to the work
OpenProject can show linked pull-request status and GitHub Actions state on work packages. Links can be many-to-many, so a work package need not be limited to one pull request. References connect the project discussion to the implementation and its external workflow results.
Setup spans both systems: an appropriately permissioned integration user and API token, repository webhooks, module activation and view permissions are required. Configure the shared webhook secret to verify signatures. The integration displays GitHub activity; GitHub continues to host the repository and run CI. A displayed result is not by itself proof that the release reached production.
OpenProject pricing: Community, Cloud and Enterprise
Community is free to license, supports unlimited users and projects, and relies on community help. It requires server-administration knowledge. For a team that can own the installation, this makes current Scrum and action boards worth evaluating before assuming a paid edition is necessary.
Cloud is hosted and maintained by OpenProject; on-premises runs on your infrastructure. Paid Enterprise options add features and support, including the multiple-active-sprint capability. Basic offers working-hours email support, Professional adds phone support, and higher tiers add installation, upgrade or onboarding assistance. Individual external work-package sharing is also an Enterprise add-on.
Use OpenProject pricing for up-to-date amounts. Select hosting, billing term, currency, seat minimum and required add-ons to compare the total for your team. A support subscription for an on-premises installation also leaves operating responsibilities with your organization.
What to check before moving a team
For self-managed use, assign ownership of patches, access, integration secrets and recovery. Backups need both PostgreSQL data and OpenProject assets. A hosted trial can help evaluate the workflow, but it does not validate your own installation or restore process.
If switching from another tracker, check custom-field mapping, attachments, history and version compatibility with a representative project. For a Jira move, include issue relationships and historical activity in that sample before retiring the original tracker.
Verdict: Scrum with room for the wider schedule
OpenProject is a strong candidate when sprints, release versions and broader project planning need to coexist, especially when operating the system yourself matters. Current Community functionality deserves a real look; simultaneous sprints, external sharing and support needs then help determine whether Enterprise is necessary.
Compare Taiga for an agile-focused Scrum and Kanban workflow, or Redmine for configurable issue and version tracking. You can also compare software-team planning tools.
Try a backlog, one sprint and a linked GitHub pull request in the version you intend to use. Then choose the hosting and support offer around that working process.
